Building Names & Signage Letters

Building Signage & Lettering

An important area of branding for buildings such as commercial offices, residential block of flats and businesses is exterior signage used to display the name of the building or the company situated there which is usually displayed in the form of 3D Building Letters as well as Building Signs.

Three-dimensional letters for buildings are pretty much produced in the same way as shop sign letters and manufactured to your exact requirements so they can be produced in a certain font and size, or in a particular material finish and colour. The majority of building signage is produced in metal such as brushed stainless steel to prolong the life of the signage and ensure it stands the test of time. Also, the product needs to require very little maintenance and continue to look good without it needing to be cleaned constantly which is why brushed stainless steel is the most commonly used product for buildings.

LED lighting can be incorporated into the letters during the manufacturing process which helps make the building signage more visible at night. External florescent tube lighting and LED trough lighting can also be used as an alternative method of illuminating the signage.

Here are some examples of some popular methods of producing lettering and signage for buildings:

brushed steel building letters

3D Brushed Steel Metal Letters

Manufactured from a commercial quality metal such as a 304 and 316 grade steel, the 3D brushed steel letters are made to order using a range of fonts in various sizes. A flat sheet of brushed steel is laser-cut to the shape and size of the typeface in which the design is based on. In order to create the depth of the letter, a strip of brushed steel is folded around and welded onto the side of the letter to make it look solid and chunky. The letters can then be mounted onto the side of a building using a range of fixing methods such as ‘flush-fixing’ whereby the letters are fitted flush to the surface of the wall with hidden fixings, and also ‘raised-fixings’ where the letters are mounted to the wall with stand-off brackets so they stand proud off the wall.

The depth of the 3D stainless steel letters are often usually produced proportionate to the height of the letters which tends to be around 30-50mm however they can be much deeper or chunkier if need be.

Flat Cut Raised Brushed Steel Letters

Produced in a 304 or 316 grade brushed stainless steel, the flat cut raised brushed steel letters are a popular choice for building signage because they have an extremely high resistance to corrosion giving it a much longer life span than any other non-alloy product. Produced from a flat sheet of metal, the letters are individually laser cut out to the size and shape of the typeface required.

The depth of the letter depends on the thickness of the material they’re cut from which is usually 2mm – 3mm however with the use of raised wall fixings, this helps to add depth and dimension.

The flat cut letters can be mounted to a wall using a screw fixing which allows the letters to be detachable or they can be permanently mounted flush to the wall with wall pins and chemical adhesive.

3D polished chrome building signage

3D Polished Chrome Metal Letters

Manufactured from a commercial quality metal such as a 304 and 316 grade steel, the 3D polished chrome finished stainless steel letters are made to order using a range of fonts in various sizes. A flat sheet of highly polished steel is laser-cut to the shape and size of the typeface in which the design is based on. In order to create the depth of the letter, a strip of polished steel is folded around and welded onto the side of the letter to make it look solid and chunky.

The depth of the 3D chrome letters are often usually produced proportionate to the height of the letters which tends to be around 30-50mm however they can be much deeper or chunkier if need be.

Produced from a flat sheet of polished steel, the letters are individually laser cut out to the size and shape of the typeface required.

painted metal exteral signage

Painted 3D Metal Letters

Produced in either aluminium or stainless steel and coloured with a powder-coated or wet-sprayed paint finish, the 3D Painted Letters are made to your requirements in a range of sizes, fonts and thicknesses. The metal used to create the letters usually depends on the size of the letters and the design of the typeface. For larger lettering, aluminium is usually used to redue the weight of the signage.

A sheet of metal is laser-cut to the shape of the typeface used in the design and then a return strip of metal is welded onto the sides of the letter to create the desired depth before being painted to a specific RAL colour or Pantone colour . The letters can then be mounted to the building exterior with either raised wall fixings or flush wall mountings depending on the desired effect need.

LED lighting can also be used as a method of illuminating the lettering or logo.

3D foamex letters

Painted 3D Foamex Letters

Made from a high-density plastic known as foamex, the flat cut letters are bespoke and made-to-order in a range of sizes, colours, fonts and thicknesses.

A sheet of plastic foamex is cnc-cut to the shape of the typeface used and the size required before being wet-sprayed to your desired Pantone or RAL colour. The letters are usually mounted to the exterior to the building using a two-part male/female fixing which is not only a strong method of attaching the letters, but it allows you to remove the lettering at a later date if need be.

The plastic foamex letters are available in a number of RAL and Pantone colours to suit your branding guidelines and thicknesses of the letters usually range from between 10mm to 19mm.

3D acrylic building letters

3D Acrylic Building Letters

The 3D built up Perspex Acrylic letters are produced entirely from a single pre-coloured acrylic to create a three-dimensional letter which has the same colour on the front of the letter as it does on the sides which gives the illusion that the letter is solid and chunky, when in fact they're hollow inside. The side depth of each letter usually varies between 50mm - 170mm depending on the height of each letter however this can be made deeper or shallower if required.

With this method of production, internal illumination can be used to illuminate the entire set of letters, both front and sides of the design, and halo illumination can be added to increase the brightness of the logo when mounted to the wall. The 3D acrylic text can be mounted to the wall with raised wall fixings or mounted flush to the surface if required.

There are a whole range of pre-coloured acrylics which can be used to create the 3D logo as well as opal and semi-translucent acrylic to create different effects.

raised acrylic building letters

Flat Cut Acrylic Building Letters

Acrylic such as Perspex is a very popular choice of material used for signage as it’s cost-effective, durable and available in a whole range of colours. Produced typically in thicknesses such as 5mm and 10mm, the acrylic is mounted to the exterior of the building brickwork or cladding by using a screw-based fixing which is easy to attach and straightforward to remove at a later date if need be.

The acrylic letters are cut from a flat sheet of plastic to produce each individual letter.  The acrylic letters are available in such a wide range of colours so you’re able to get a pretty close colour match to the colours used in your logo. Alternatively, if an exact pantone colour needs to be used for the lettering then the acrylic can be painted to achieve the colour reference required.
