The Art of Neon Sign Making

Neon signs are produced by our glass-bending specialists who turn tubes of glass into shapes to simulate a company name, logo or strapline. There are many colors available for your shop sign which is determined by the type of glass tubes used and the composition of the gas filling.

Neon sign manufacturing is a cottage industry and an eclectic art. Even today, almost all neon tubes are hand made. The interior of the tubes are coated with a thin phosphorescent powder coating, affixed to the interior wall of the tube by a binding material. The tube is filled with a purified gas mixture, and the gas ionized by a high voltage applied between the ends of the sealed tube through cold cathodes welded onto the ends.

Neon signs may not be the cheapest method of sign making in the industry however they most certainly are one of the most effective! They visually capture the audience and passing by customers and deliver the message across clearly, after all it’s hard to miss a neon sign!

An illuminated sign gives your shop sign extra presence and makes it stand out during the hours of darkness when there are precious few other distractions to passers by.

Don’t let your shop sign become invisible just because it’s dark. It might be many hours until closing time yet your customers won't notice you along the shop parade or high street because that otherwise fantastic sign of yours doesn't present its self too well under murky street lighting, fog and darkness. Or why not use the darkness to augment existing signage by adding some flashing neon lights or LEDs which would otherwise be invisible during day light.

We also have a large range illuminated signs produced in a variety of production methods - visit our illuminated signage section for more information on what's available for you and your business.

neon lights mounted onto brickwork

Neon Sign Letters - Mounted onto existing wall or brickwork

Mounting your neon letters or logo onto an internal or external brick wall is a great way of keeping costs down as well as creating urban-style signage. The letters are hand formed and shaped using a template of the letters or logo and then mounted to raised wall brackets with fit directly to the wall.

Because the skeleton of the sign is mounted directly to the wall it means that the connecting wires, power cables and fixings are visible as there’s no way of hiding them however this style of neon signage is becoming more and more popular nowadays in swanky bars and night clubs which are deliberately lit poorly.

With a range of colours, sizes and styles available, we’re able to provide a range of options available from simple designs to the more complex styles.

neon aluminium fascia

Neon Sign Letters - Mounted onto custom made aluminium fascia panel

Neon letters and logos can be used to make up the illuminated letters on a shop fascia or shop sign board in the same way as shop lettering. The letters are hand formed and shaped using a template of the letters or logo are then mounted onto an aluminium fascia panel which is then mounted onto the shop front or over an existing wooden fascia.

This method of sign-writing is a great way of hiding all the wires and cables which connect all the neon letters together and powers all the neon tubes. The aluminium fascia can then be sign-written using other materials such as vinyl to ensure the text and lettering is visible during the daytime and clearly visible and illuminated at night with the neon lettering.

neon sign in acrylic case

Neon Sign Letters - Mounted within a clear acrylic case

Neon letters and logos can also be produced in a way so they can be hung up in a shop window or on an internal wall which are within reach of the public. A clear acrylic case is produced which protects the neon letters from being touched and damaged. The letters are hand formed and shaped using a template of the letters or logo are then mounted inside a bespoke clear acrylic case which can either be mounted onto the wall using wall fixings or hung up on wire cables or chains.

This method of neon sign-writing is a great way of enclosing all the wires and cables which connect all the neon letters together and powers all the neon tubes inside a self-contained unit.

cold cathode neon lights

Cold Cathode Sign Letters

Cold Cathode lighting and logos are produced in a similar way to neon-lit letters by forming tubes which are available in a number of sizes. Cold Cathode lighting is one of the most versatile lighting solutions available which provides flicker-free, instant start with full dimming capabilities as well as a wide range of colours to choose from. Cold cathodes aren’t electrically heated by a filament therefore they don’t emit the same level of heat as a neon tubed light which are heated by a filament.

The letters are hand formed and shaped using a template of the letters or logo and then mounted either to an existing wall or inside a bespoke clear acrylic case which can either be mounted onto the wall using wall fixings or hung up on wire cables or chains.

This method of sign-writing is a great way of creating a neon-style sign and enclosing all the wires and cables which connect all the neon letters together and powers all the neon tubes inside a self-contained unit.

Halo Back-Lit Built Up Letters - illuminated from behind with LED Lights

Halo-illuminated letters are a popular method of illuminating either the letters on your shop sign or a logo. This method of lighting can be used for both internal and external signs. The letters are fabricated to create a built-up 3d letter which is hollow inside. L.E.D lights are then fitted inside the letters which illuminates the letters from behind and which projects the light onto the wall or surface behind the letters.

A number of coloured L.E.D lights can be used to illuminate the letters however the white LEDs are most common as it illuminates the clearest.

In poorly-lit areas this method of lighting will mean that the face of the letters will be dark and not illuminated as the light will be positioned from behind which creates a silhouette-style glow of the logo or letters, however this still should produce enough light to make the lettering readable.
